THE LAND WILL KNOW will be the third STRANGEWAYS book, and it’s going to be something different. Before I’d gone and told the main story, with Collins versus a werewolf or Collins versus vampires or what have you. Then there was a backup feature that turned everything on its head and told things from the monster’s point of view. But I wanted to do something new with THE LAND WILL KNOW, so if you want a quick pitch, it’s “The campfire ghost story reinvented” and the best campfire ghost stories of my generation happened in the pages of EC comics. So yeah, I owe a great debt to the writers and artists of the classic EC horror and sci-fi books.
In this case, I’ve gathered up ten different artists to work on the stories. Some you know. Some you may be meeting for the first time.
Here’s the list. It’s only partially filled in at this point. As I reveal artists, this list will get completed. As with most contemporary web pages, click on the images to make them bigger than life.
THE LAND WILL KNOW
All scripts by Matt Maxwell. But each artist is going to be putting their touch on things, to be sure.
One-Eyed Jack – Gervasio and Jok
This is the bridge story that joins all the other into a (hopefully) coherent whole.
Mine – Benjamin Dewey
Sometimes you just can’t take something from someone else. Ben’s a member of the Periscope Studios up in Portland and has worked on comics for a variety of publishers, but you probably saw him drawing “Blighter,” written by Jeff Parker in DARK HORSE PRESENTS. He’s also an accomplished musician as you can hear here.
The Man They Shouldn’t Hang -
Dry Heart – Gervasio and Jok
What you wanted in your youth chills your bones with maturity. Sharp-eyed readers may remember this as a follow-on announced after MURDER MOON, back when it was going to be published serially.
Are Not Men – Alex Sheikman
The sideshow guaranteed all the freaks were genuine. Inspired by Guy Davis’ artwork in the original MURDER MOON. Alex has written and illustrated ROBOTIKA, and draws the upcoming THE DARK CRYSTAL series from Archaia, as well as providing covers and interior spot illustrations for STRANGEWAYS: THE THIRSTY.
88 Keys -
Between Jackstraw and Salamander – Tom Fowler
Magic and revenge make for a deadly combination. Tom’s best known for MYSTERIUS THE UNFATHOMABLE and his current work on VENOM.
The Boot – Tom Neely
Told by a man with just one boot. This Tom is best known for HENRY AND GLENN, THE BLOT and THE WOLF (which just came out and is GREAT.)
The Land Will Know – Gabriel Hardman
I don’t want to wreck the surprise on this one, so I’m not gonna tell you about it. Suffice it to say that Gabe is one of my favorite artists working today, possessing a classical aesthetic but not locked into the past. He, along with Jeff Parker made THE HULK (the red Hulk even) one of the best books that Marvel is printing today.
Collier’s Bones -
I’ll post to twitter (@highway_62) and the like when incremental progress on filling this list takes place. And I’ll be stocking it with images and the like, so you can get an idea of what these artists do and what they might do in the pages of THE LAND WILL KNOW.
